The gathering storm: Britain's faltering economy

We have the face the reality. There is little hope. Exaggerated optimism is inadequate. We know quite well that after the so called "emergency budget" any chance of a sustained recovery was flushed away. You do not need to be a economist to realise that without jobs, investments and production, you cannot be optimistic. Cuts and cuts alone results in recession. I am afraid to say but the worst is still to come when 600000 jobs culling starts in the public sector. While the crisis deepens, the government begins to inflict a cynical revulsion on those receiving benefits. It is exactly when the most vulnerable families need it most is when this irresponsible government decides to implode it. No, for those in low income, those without jobs, the forecast cannot be better. The wealthy cannot feel if the inflation is 2% or 3% higher, however the less privileged ones will find it very hard to cope. Let's be frank, with or without debt issues, this government is doing what it always did when in power. Recession, mass unemployment, and above all, the appalling disregard towards the working class and poor families in this country. And yes, sadly many of us have a goldfish memory...

How to classify an Europhobe

Many biased spurious arguments. Half truth and exaggeration. Xenophobia and fear. These are the main ingredients to make a real Europhobe. They are everywhere and at all costs try to get you on board. They do not enjoy the two main achievements from being part of the European Union. For the first time in history we enjoy more than 50 years of peace in Europe. We don't fight each other for market dominance, land or race. We live harmoniously. Secondly, the freedom of movement. We are free to go anywhere, live anywhere, work anywhere, trade anywhere. The Union makes the strength. I can classify the Europhes in 4 groups: They are: Group A (The Mentally raped) Those who are lead by the partial media which publishes inaccurate or exaggerated stories (Euromyths), most of which give the impression of absurd bureaucracy and over-regulation. Coupled with poor education, poor access to accurate and unbiased information, I call this group the "The mentally raped". They

Fidel Castro, uma missão cumprida.

Escapou de vários tentativas de assassinato pela CIA e enfrentou o embargo, a hostilidade americana por 50 anos. Tirano ou não, seu legado é inspirador: Numa ilha com solo pobre e sem recursos minerais, a revolução de Fidel logrou em trazer índices elevados de desenvolvimento humano e social. Alimentou os famintos, eliminou a desnutrição infantil e erradicou o analfabetismo. Fez de Cuba o país de menor mortalidade infantil nas Americas e onde a educação e saúde públicas são referências para o mundo. Fidel foi uma chama que brilhava, um constante aviso ao capitalismo voraz, um alerta mais ou menos assim: "Ou comecem a priorizar a necessidade do cidadão ao invés do capital, ou a revolução também baterá à sua porta". Indiretamente, a revolução cubana se propagou pelo mundo na forma de avanços para a causa de uma sociedade menos desigual.

The context of this social unrest in London

Decades of individualism, competition and state-encouraged selfishness – combined with a systematic crushing of unions and the ever-increasing criminalisation of dissent – have made Britain one of the most unequal countries in the developed world. Since the Tories came to power just over a year ago, we witnessed multiple student protests, occupations of many universities, several strikes, a half-a-million-strong trade union march and now unrest on the streets of the capital. Each of these events was sparked by a different cause, yet all take place against a backdrop of brutal cuts and enforced austerity measures. Tottenham has the fourth highest level of child poverty in London and an unemployment rate of 8.8%, double the national average, with one vacancy for every 54 seeking work in the borough. Finally, police are not omnipotent. This situation has underlined very clearly that law and order is generally maintained by consent, not coercion.
